How bioethanol fireplaces work
A bioethanol fireplace burns liquid bioethanol fuel in a stainless steel burner. Because there is no wood, coal or gas, it needs no chimney or flue and no electrical connection – which is why you can put one almost anywhere, subject to the safety guidance below.
Step by step
- Position it. Hang a wall-mounted model on its mounting rails, build an insert into a fire-resistant surround, or place a freestanding model on a stable, level, non-flammable surface.
- Fill the burner. With the burner completely cool and the flame fully out, pour bioethanol into the burner using the funnel. The manufacturer recommends pouring fuel into a smaller container first, and dosing from that.
- Light it. Light the burner with a long lighter. The flame builds up within a short time.
- Put it out. Close the burner with the snuffer tool supplied. Wait until it is cold before refuelling.
Burn time and heat
Burn time depends on the burner size and flame setting; for most of our models the manufacturer states roughly 1–3 hours per litre. Rated heat output is typically around 2 kW. A bioethanol fireplace is a supplementary heat source and is not intended to replace your heating.
Safe use
- Use only in a well-ventilated room. A flame uses oxygen and produces water vapour and carbon dioxide.
- Use bioethanol fuel only, and follow the fuel manufacturer’s instructions.
- Never add fuel to a burning or hot burner – let it cool fully first.
- Keep at least 50 cm from flammable materials. On walls that are not non-combustible, use a thermal insulation mat as the manufacturer recommends.
- Keep fuel, lighters and the fireplace out of the reach of children and pets, and never leave a burning fireplace unattended.
- Always follow the instructions supplied with your fireplace.
